6/2/2023 0 Comments Laura marx fitzgerald books![]() My eye was drawn to the intriguing-sounding title, then as I read through the description I thought, how perfect! An ‘imaginative and darkly funny Victorian’ read? Count me in. Withering-by-Sea title is one of those lucky discoveries I came across during one of my regular Goodreads browse of children’s titles. Author and illustrator Judith Rossell has a number of titles to her name, but is a new name to me. Second up is Judith Rossell’s Withering-by-Sea, a historical children’s title set in the Victorian era. I have such a soft spot for historical fiction/historical mysteries and The Gallery– with its Roaring Twenties setting and stately manor-set mystery- sounds absolutely fantastical! (…And check out that gorgeous cover!). While I am sad to say I have not yet read Fitzgerald’s well-reviewed debut, Under the Egg, I couldn’t help but add her second novel to my must-read as well. This week: historical middle-grade fiction! First up is The Gallery, the second middle grade novel from Laura Marx Fitzgerald. ![]() ![]() ![]() The lists will include all genres I like to read, everything from picture books to comics, children’s lit to adult fiction! It’s moments like this where Pluto really shines, when there’s a darkness in the story. When a robot policeman is destroyed on the job, the force throw his body away in a dumpster, leaving Gesicht to fish out his remains to present something to the robot’s grieving wife. People don’t quite see that the robots are just as real as any human. Gesicht is also a robot, with a human like appearance, and is struggling with his own thoughts on life and value. After Mont Blanc, one of the most renowned robots in the world, is murdered and torn apart, inspector Gesicht is tasked with finding out who would be capable of destroying such a powerful robot. Instead of the story being a playful action story, it’s instead told as a mystery thriller. Urasawa and Nagasaki took the relatively short story, and turned it into a cyberpunk noir that deals with the themes of what it means to be human, artificial intelligence, and murder. Pluto by Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki is based on the ‘The Greatest Robot on Earth’ story arc of the legendary and highly influential Astro Boy. ![]() 6/1/2023 0 Comments Pull of the stars book![]() She did not know when her birthday was and had never stepped foot in a hospital before. ![]() Bridie is to help in any way she can, if only to deliver messages, mop up spills etc. With just three beds, with only just enough room to walk around them, Julia worked tirelessly to care for her patients.īridie Sweeney – is assigned to help Julia Power when staff illness has left her alone in her ward. That said, this is a brilliant, fast-paced read. Yes, it is about bats but it is not set in the same world or mythos as the other books. I must note though, that this book is only ever so slightly a prequel to the Silverwing books. The beasts can no longer live all together in harmony.Having read the Silverwing trilogy I was expecting this book to be good and I wasn't disappointed. This dialogue is a reference to the male dominant African society and the role of second fiddle women play in the traditional African society.Īnother pointer to the theme of male chauvinism is rooted in how the women are manipulated by the men in the text. With a child strapped to her back?” The Lion and the Jewel He backs his claim with the fact that it has been scientifically proven that “women have a smaller brain than men” hence, “they are called the weaker sex”. He claims that Sidi, as a woman, has a smaller brain than his. We first catch a glimpse of this in the dialogue between Lakunle and Sidi in which the former attributes the latter’s inability to comprehend what he is saying to the generic inferiority of women. The theme of male chauvinism is clearly portrayed in Soyinka’s The Lion and the Jewel. This is a belief in the innate superiority of men over women. Some of the themes in Wole Soyinka’s The Lion and the Jewel include male chauvinism, marriage and love, deceit, modernity versus tradition, and, virility and cowardice. ![]() |
